I don’t know if it will warm other people’s hearts, but it warmed mine a little.
I don’t know if it will warm other people’s hearts, but it warmed mine a little.
I was at the YMCA yesterday. I brought my three kids to the kids’ gym while I ran on the jogging track that is right above the kids’ gym. Every time I’d loop around, my kids would wave and holler up to me.
Then this other little boy started waving with them, yelling “Hi, Mommy” along with my kids. I thought, “Well, that’s slightly weird” but I kept waving to him because he got the biggest smile on his little face every time I did.
My kids got sick of waving at me every time and were off playing, but this little guy kept waving every time, shouting out “Hi, Mommy!”. And I waved back every time. I really would have rather just focused on my running, but his smile was just so beautiful. I just hoped his mom wouldn’t come in and get weirded out that he was calling me mommy.
Anyway, he left, and a little bit later, I went down to get my kids. The lady that was watching the kids told me that the little boy that kept waving to me was with a group of foster kids. The poor baby didn’t have a mom to wave at him from the running track. It broke my heart, but it made me very glad I didn’t just ignore him and/or correct him for calling me mommy. For 20 minutes, he got to pretend he had a mommy, even if all that mommy was doing was running around and round in circles in a running track. Poor sweet baby.
Moral of the story: be nice to kids. They might really need a small moment of kindness.
