When I was about 12, I was walking down a busy high street with my mom and nan when we saw a pigeon on the floor, dragging itself along, it had been mauled by a dog which was being dragged away by its owner.. I ran over to it, it was in pretty bad shape, but I had a bit of faith that it would make it.
My story isn’t anything amazing or great, I just think some people might appreciate it.
I knew that sending it to the RSPCA would result in it being put down. So, seeing as my nan owned a shop on that stretch of the street, I asked her to go and get a box. I was holding the bird for a while, it didn’t really struggle to get away before putting it into the box.
I took it home and kept it in our garage, feeding, cleaning its wounds and generally spending some time with it. After about a month I took it out into the garden, watched it as it hopped around and started flying in short bursts.
I started taking it out 2-3 times a day for the next couple of weeks and it was getting more and more confident and was flying up onto the fence. He wasn’t fully healed when I took him out on his last day with me, it was strange, he flew up onto the fence.. looked at me for a few seconds and then flew away. I didnt see him for ages after that. He also had these mesmerizing silvery eyes that I had never seen on a common pigeon before.
The next year, I was sitting in my dining room when, no joke the biggest pigeon(and not in a fat way, but in a grand magnificent way) flew and landed outside the window, and started at me with very similar mesmerizing silvery eyes for around 15 seconds (which is a pretty damn long time for a bird to do such a thing).
He then made his home in the garden after this, and im almost sure its the same bird that I rescued the year before. I had never seen a pigeon that looked so clean and well built, and with eyes like his. After about 2-3 years I never saw him again.
Also, about 2-3 days after the first pigeon flew away, we found an injured sparrow in the garden, we looked after that one for about a week before it was well enough to fly away.
Tl;dr – Rescued a pigeon, nursed it back to health, it flew away, and returned a year later looking awesome and made a nest in my garden.
